Why Subscription?

In order to receive the benefits of Locale X, a subscription is required. We’ve added hundreds of new features in Locale X, such as new conditions and settings, a beautiful new design, and tight integration with the latest versions of Android.

If you previously purchased Locale, you can continue to use the old version of the app (Locale 6.4.0). Nothing is being taken away. It is your choice to upgrade. Locale X also offers a free trial option, to see if the new version is right for you.

Locale is the longest-maintained app on the Google Play store, launching with the first Android devices in 2008. Developing an app for such a long period of time requires an extraordinary effort, especially as there are new versions of Android and new device models. In addition, feature development is continuously ongoing. The Locale X codebase is 20x larger than the Locale 1.0 codebase, and 2.5x larger than the Locale 6.4.0 codebase. A subscription enables the ongoing tremendous development behind the app.

The functionality of Locale X also goes way beyond what you see on screen. We have a variety of ongoing cloud services to provide new benefits in Locale X:

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to subscribe during the beta?

The subscription code is surprisingly complex, so testing subscriptions now is an important part of the beta process. Locale X is a huge leap over Locale 6.4.0, and beta participants will immediately benefit from all of the improvements in the app.

Is there a free version of Locale X?

Locale X offers a free trial, so you can see if Locale X is right for you. In addition, you can browse the app without a subscription to get a feel for the app and how setting it up works.

Without a subscription, the app will not run in the background and will not monitor conditions or change settings automatically.

Is there a discount for people who bought Locale previously?

No, however, there are different subscription options. For example, the yearly option offers a discount over the monthly pricing.

Can I share my subscription with my family?

Google Play does not allow for in-app subscriptions to be shared. This is a Google Play limitation. Some of Google’s own services, such as Music and Play Pass, have special access to your account that is not available to app developers.

What happens to Locale 6.4.0?

Nothing is being taken away. You can continue using Locale 6.4.0, and it will continue working as before. However, all future updates and improvements will only be available to Locale X. Upgrading to Locale X is your choice, and we look forward to having you experience all the great things the new version can do for you.
