  - If you update an existing installation of Locale X, there will be no immediate changes.
  - If you perform a fresh install of Locale X on Android 13 (e.g. on a new device or you uninstall/reinstall the app), then the ongoing notification will be disabled by default. It can be enabled under the Hamburger menu in the top left corner, then choosing Ongoing notification settings.

Locale X is a major new version. For all of the new features in Locale X, please see the Locale X release announcement. 10.0.295 is a minor update with the following improvements:

Improved compatibility with Android 10 and higher
- Short version: Install the free Locale X Wi-Fi Helper for Android 10 and above to enable toggling Wi-Fi. Locale X will provide an in-app prompt if the helper is missing.
- Long version: Android 10 and later prevent apps from changing Wi-Fi. To work around this limitation, Locale X has been running in a backwards compatibility mode. Google will prevent app developers from releasing app updates with backwards compatibility mode starting November 1. In preparation for this, Locale X now uses the Locale X Wi-Fi Helper app which is a free download. The helper can continue running in backwards compatibility mode (without being updated), while allowing Locale X to continue being updated after November 1. Without the helper, Locale X will keep toggling Wi-Fi for a few more weeks but we recommend installing it now so that we can test this integration.

Water Missions International Project

Update: This project was completed and fully funded. A water treatment system was deployed to the Croix-des-Bouquets region of Haiti and is serving a community of about 1,500 people.

Today I’m excited to announce our first philanthropy project in partnership with Water Missions International. The goal? To raise $30,000 for a complete safe water project for a specific community in a developing or disaster ridden country.

My friends George and Molly Greene founded Water Missions International after hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras in 1998. At the time, George and Molly operated their own environmental engineering firm. They received a request for six water treatment systems, but they were unable to find any reliable existing solutions. So George said, “Water treatment isn’t rocket science. Let’s figure it out.” Forty-eight hours later, they had built their own fully functional water treatment system using off-the-shelf parts from a local hardware store. Engineering their own water purification system was only the first step, however, as George and Molly flew to Honduras to personally deliver and install the systems.

Account Deletion

Locale X offers the option to create an account to backup and sync situations. Creating an account is entirely optional, as all features of the app (except backup and sync) function without an account.

If you’ve created an account and would like to delete it, please follow these steps:

Open Locale X on your Android device
Tap on the “hamburger” menu in the top left corner
Choose Account
If you are not logged into an account, you’ll need to log in
Tap the … menu in the top right corner
Choose Delete Account
At the prompt, confirm account deletion

After your account is deleted, all of your situation information is immediately deleted from the cloud.

Disabling Optimizers and Memory Cleaners

Some Android devices have an “optimizer” or “memory cleaner” that prevents Locale from running.

Note that manufacturers intentionally keep moving and renaming these settings every few months, in order to make it difficult for you to turn them off. They also reset your preferences after system updates, so you might have to re-check them after updating your phone.

For these reasons our instructions are pretty much guaranteed to be incomplete, so please use your brain to look for settings that look suspiciously similar.

Situations

Locale lets you configure situations—circumstances your device might encounter throughout the day. Situations are made up of conditions and settings. For example, your “At Work” situation might activate when your location condition is “77 Massachusetts Avenue” and triggers your Volume setting to silent.

Situation Priority

Situations are listed in priority order. Higher priority situations take precedence over lower priority situations, allowing Locale to handle overlapping situations. For example, your “Asleep” situation might be higher priority than “At Home” so that Asleep can take precedence to silence the ringer at night. To re-prioritize situations, navigate to the situation list, then touch and hold the situation name in the list and drag.

Caller -> Volume: The Caller condition no longer exists. In Locale X, VIPs are now configured inside the Volume setting. Locale X will make adjustments to your situations during the conversion. It will then be necessary for you to manually add your VIPs to your “starred” contacts in the Android address book.
Orientation -> Face Down: The Orientation condition in Locale 6.4.0 is now the Face Down condition in Locale X. (The face up option in Locale 6 was rarely used, and by removing it we’ve been able to substantially optimize power usage and performance).
Movement -> Driving: The Movement condition in Locale 6.4.0 is now the Driving condition in Locale X. Locale X detects Driving using Bluetooth with much greater speed and lower power usage. (Locale 6.4.0 used minute vibrations to identify driving, which can be tricky to detect on some devices).
Ringtone -> 🚫: The Ringtone setting in Locale 6.4.0 no longer exists. This was often confused with the Volume setting, and by removing it we’ve been able to make the app much easier for new users.

How do I configure VIP callers?

In Locale X, VIP callers are configured inside the Volume setting. You can set the volume to allow “priority” calls and messages to come through, then set the list of priority contacts in Android settings.

(If you previously used Locale 6.4.0, the “Caller” condition has been replaced with this new approach).

Why is Locale’s location circle larger than Google Maps?

Google’s circle is only 65% confident. Locale requires greater than 99% confidence to work reliably, which means a larger circle.

How to Upgrade

Locale X is a separate download, so you can upgrade at your own pace. During the public beta of Locale X, you’ll need to opt-in to download the app (it won’t show up on Google Play searching by app name).

When Locale X first runs, it will detect if Locale 6.4.0 is also installed and automatically convert your existing situations (there are a few minor differences). The Locale 6.4.0 background service will be stopped to prevent conflicts.

Locale X is engineered to be robust. Every release goes through an extensive test suite, and the app has been tested since 2018 by an elite group of several thousand testers. There are a few minor items that we’re actively tracking.

#1212 Location search won’t work when hitting the enter key on the keyboard but works if you select an autocomplete item from the list.
#1035 Switching accounts for backup is not supported. If you sign in with one account, restore situations, then switch to another account, those situations that were restored will not be uploaded to the new account. To upload them to the new account, every situation must be edited.
#1015 Imagine a slow loris placing the phone face down, very very slowly. Under such conditions, the Face Down condition may not detect a change.
#1038 Wallpapers do not sync between devices, because they are very large compared to other condition and setting types.
#1492 Tapping on the ongoing notification will clear the stack of screens in Locale to bring up the Locale X home screen. This means that if you’re editing a situation and tap the notification, the edits will be cleared.

Limitations

Limitations are not bugs in Locale, but rather limitations with Android.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I redownload Locale?

Locale 6 is no longer listed on the Google Play store, to avoid confusion with Locale X. If you previously purchased Locale 6, the steps to redownload it are:

Open the Google Play app
Tap on the account icon in the top right corner. If you have multiple Google accounts, make sure that you’re still signed into the account that originally was used to purchase Locale
Tap Manage apps and device and then Manage
From there, you should be able to install Locale. (If you can’t find the app, at the top, tap Installed and then Not installed)

Why does Locale stop running in the background?

A “battery saver” is preventing the app from running. The symptoms vary from Locale stopping after a few days, not running when the screen is off, or not starting when Android is rebooted. Locale’s ongoing notification might disappear, and Locale will “wake up” only when tapping on the app’s icon from the Android home screen.

Volume Control

When Bluetooth connects or disconnects, Android will reset the volume. This can conflict with Locale. This often occurs if you drive and have Location-based situations configured to adjust volume.

To prevent this conflict, consider creating a Driving situation with a “Volume, Ringer and Notifications” and a “Volume, Media” setting. After creating the Driving situation, go to the situation list and move it to be higher priority than your Location-based situations. When you arrive, the location situation will become active but the settings will be suppressed by the Driving situation. When Driving ends as you turn off the car, Locale is smart enough to wait a few seconds for Android’s adjustments to happen before firing the volume settings in the location-based situation.

Follow these steps in order to help debug your situations.

1. Is the background service running?

If Locale’s background service isn’t running, then none of your situations will run.

Open Locale and check the Overview screen. There is a card which shows the status of the background service including when it started and why.

If Locale’s service isn’t running, the app will appear to “wake up” when you open it and you’ll see a message that Locale started when you opened the app. If this happens, most likely a “battery saver” or “memory cleaner” is stopping the app. These usually kill apps if you haven’t opened for a few days, which can make the issue seem inconsistent.
